The history of the Cork and Macroom Railway has been covered previously by the late Colm Creedon. The author of this work concentrates on the planning and construction of the line, bringing to light many facets not previously published in readily available material. Most of the work is given over to the rival factions planning to build a line to Macroom - dividing into the northern faction and the southern faction. Eventually, the southern faction won out and the line that existed until 1954 was built. The disputes between the two factions could be transported to any area of the country and the underlying issues would be the same - only the names of the people and the local placenames would change. Like Sweeney’s work on the Lough Swilly Railway, this work is a welcome addition to the published knowledge of the Cork & Macroom Direct Railway and is as complimentary to Creedon’s work as Sweeney’s work on the Lough Swilly Railway is to Paterson’s standard company history. The one thing against this book is that in privately publishing the book, there is no ISBN, no publisher details and no contact address. Ordering a copy might not be easy.
